We were given a lovely book called ‘Back Roads Italy’ for Christmas last year – it’s been a real gem as we have found places and things to do that I don’t think appear on the regular tourist radar…Our 10km circular walk from Montisi took us through the the Crete Senesi which is traditional Tuscan countryside…through fields and ancient olive groves, past a fortified village – the Castello di Montelifre which dates back to the 11th century – along muddy tracks through the woods and past old farms complete with magnificent roosters…it was fabulous and we didn’t see another soul until we arrived back in the village – a welcome sit down in the shade for a coffee before we found ourselves having a personal ‘olive oil tasting’ and demonstration by a lovely old chap who showed us his little workshop…needless to say, the oil was excellent too…
I hope the photos will give you a taste of the beautiful Tuscan countryside…
Next stop…Cinque Terre…
